The handmade setting is of 15 karat yellow gold tested and the original bale. The pendant is from an Atlanta collector of antique jewelry and Circa 1865. The pendant is set with a hand cut diamond that is Mine Cut and 10 points of a carat in size. Diamonds mean “Forever Thine and True Love” in the Victorian Language of Gemstones. Also the pendant has a Baroque pearl as a dangle and two smaller pearls set in the pendant. Baroque pearls are Sea pearls but an irregularly shaped pearl that was formed in the harder tissue of the oyster. This type of pearl was prized in the 19th Century because of the classical period of jewelry design it was a favorite. The Victorians also admired the art form that was new to the world in the Renaissance times. Pearls symbolized “Modest Loveliness” in the traditions that the Victorians lived by.
This pendant was worn on a ribbon but I have added a 14 karat gold new chain to the pendant. The pendant length is 2 inches in length and 3/4 inch wide. This is a wonderful Civil War era pendant that is one of a kind, handmade and in excellent condition.
