Navette is a French word referring to this shape as "navette," meaning "little boat." Americans called this style of ring Marquise (pronounced marKEYS) the ring is circa 1880 and has a handmade gold work setting of 15 karat gold. The ring is set with 18 rose cut garnets which are set around 5 center diamonds. Garnets have been widely known for thousands of years. Even Noah, it is reported, used a lantern from Garnet in order to safely steer his Ark through the darkness of the night. Garnets are found in jeweler from ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman eras. Many courageous discoverers and travelers wore Garnets for protection, as they were considered popular talismans and protective stones, because it was believed in those days that Garnets illuminate the night and prevent their wearer from any sort of evil. Today science explained to us that the proverbial luminosity of Garnet is caused by its high refraction of light.
The hand cut diamonds are Mine cut and Old European cut natural diamonds which were cut using other diamonds to cut the hard gems. The ring is barely under 1 inch tall and 5/16 wide. The diamond total weight is 31 points of a carat. The ring is a 6 ½ now but can be resized if needed. The ring and gemstones are in excellent condition.
