Pre-Civil War Ruby and Seed Pearl Ring:

Antique Ruby Ring
hallmarked Ring Pearls and Rubies
4618

This ring is hallmarked 15karat gold and test 15karat gold. The other hallmarks are 625 the parts of gold that make up 15 karat weight. Then an anchor which means this ring was made in Birmingham England. The last mark is the letter date of the year in which this ring was made. This last mark is blurred and I cannot see the letter so I cannot see the exact year this ring was made. The circa date would be 1850 to 1855 would be my best guess.
The ring is set with 3 natural hand cut bright clear Rubies, then 6 natural ocean Seed Pearls surrounding the center Ruby. The method of cutting gemstones by hand in this time period was an art form in itself since the artesian used a diamond to cut the gems for their settings.
History of Rubies:
The Ruby is corundum that occurs as a deep red to deep pink color of stone. Rubies are a hardness of a 9 (a diamond being a 10 with is the hardest gemstone).
Historically, Ruby is associated with royalty and the power of Life and Death. Rubies in this Victorian time period were mined in Ceylon, Burma and Siam but historically were rarely seen before the 16th Century.
The ring is lovely and well made, one of a kind as is all 19th Century Jewelry, it is a size 7 now and can be resized larger or smaller if needed.
