This is circa 1855, and handmade of 9 karat yellow gold the front of the pendant is Onyx the a gold Leaf decorated with a seed pearl in the center. The symbol in the center is an Acanthus leaf and in the Language of Flora, Acanthus is believed to be a flora of the “Heavenly Garden”. It is one of the oldest cemetery motifs and was symbolic of the triumph of the soul over life’s sorrows and sufferings. The pearl in mourning jewelry means a “tear”. The pendant is engraved on the back side with an “E L”, I would think that would be the monogram of the person who was being missed. The size is 7/8 of an inch tall including the bale, this is in excellent condition and fine to wear.
