The earrings are handmade and set with hand cut garnets that are Rose Cut. Each earring holds 19 rose cut natural stones, and Victorian garnet gemstones are a deeper true red than garnets that are mined today (which have a lot of orange to brown color to them). The garnets are set in Vermeil with French wires with the lever backs for pierced ears.
Garnet gemstones were used in the Civil War time period.
The name garnet probably comes from pomegranate.

Many ancient pieces of garnet jewelry are studded with tiny red stones that do look a lot like a cluster of pomegranate seeds! Jewelry set with garnets from Czechoslovakia was extremely popular in the nineteenth century.
Garnet Facts:
The history of Garnet dates back to the Bronze Age (more than 5,000 years ago), when it was a very popular gemstone. According to Christian and Jewish mythologies, when God's wrath clouded the earth with thunderous storms and endless rain during the Great Flood, a radiant red Garnet guided the way for Noah, ultimately leading his ark to salvation.

The size of the earrings is ¾ of an inch tall and 7/16th wide; they are from Savannah Georgia and were handed down in the family. These earrings are in excellent condition and beautiful to wear today and very comfortable.
