Pre-Civil War Wedding Locket in Yellow Gold

This is a handmade Locket of 12 karat yellow gold, which would have been used for the Locks of hair, cut on the wedding day but is empty now of the hair. This locket would have held locks of hair are called a “wedding locket” because it contains hair of the new bride and groom cut on the day of their wedding. This is a tradition that goes back to the 1700’s of cutting a lock of hair from each other on the wedding day to save in a locket or brooch. The word “lock –et” came from cutting and saving a lock of hair, a tradition that ended in the 19th Century.

The front of the locket is a machine turned design which goes back to the 1850’s and the back is a natural hand cut crystal which opens to hold the hair, this side is worn next to the heart . The locket is circa 1855 and from a collector; the pendant could have been worn by a woman hung from a ribbon or by a man as a watch fob.
This would make a great wedding gift because of the rarity and the romantic gift. The pendant is in excellent condition and strong to wear with the size being 1 1/8 tall inch by ¾ inches across, it comes with a new gold chain of 14 karat gold.
