Civil War Era Mourning Cross made of Gutta Purcha

Gutta Purcha Mourning Cross Victorian
Mournign Flowers Cross circa 1860
4073

This cross is a Victorian material that is hard to find today and is very collectible. The material is a rubber like substance made from sap of a Malayan tree. Discovered in the 1840’s and used for mourning jewelry in the pre-Civil War and Civil War time period.
This cross is circa 1855 with several types of Mourning Flowers over the entire front of the cross and the back is uncarved and smooth. The size is 3 3/4 inches tall with bale for ribbon and 2 1/8 inches wide. The pendant has what I believe to be the original black cord which is about 32 inches long but can be tied to any length you may want to wear. The cross is in excellent condition and fine to wear.
