Because of the Victorians' interest in archaeology, ancient Roman and Etruscan jewelry motifs were popular. The Etruscan period was from the 7th Century BC to the 5th Century BC.
Below a reference taken from on Etruscan Jewelry from Wikipedia:
Jewelry of the ancients: Etruscan Jewelry Castellani was one of the leading Italian jeweler designers (in a famous family lineage) of the 19th century. When the major Etruscan tombs were found, they were asked to analyze the Etruscan jewelry. They could not immediately reproduce the soldering, even when checking all ancient (Italian) sources. However at the time, there were still some traditional goldsmiths, in remote areas of the former Etruscan area, which used similar techniques with similar results as the Etruscan jewelry. They deduced the techniques of the Etruscans from these artisans. Such an approach is not uncommon, and anthropological analysis is often applied to explain archaeological finds, especially in 'traditional societies' where little has changed over the centuries
