The ring is handmade by a goldsmith from New Orleans and has been in a family for 6 generations and reasonably sold to a dealer from whom I purchased it. It was a wedding ring of the 1840 time period and is in excellent condition. The setting is of 15 karat yellow gold. The Blue Sapphires are Cabochon which means that they we hand polished, a process which took months to do. The size of the two The two oval Sapphires are ½ carat each and the two round sapphires are ¼ carat each, so the ring is set with 1 ½ carat of Blue Sapphires that are all natural. The four corners of the face of the ring are natural hand cut Pink Sapphires which are faceted. Each pink sapphire measures .07 of a carat. The total weight of the pink gemstone is about ¼ carat. Sapphires are considered a precious gemstone today and are very hard on the Moh’ scale with a rating of 9 which is the hardest stone in the world next to diamond which is a 10 on the Moh’ scale.

Blue Sapphire Information:
The Island of Serendbe (present day Sri Lanka) holds one of the earliest records for the mining of Sapphires. Ancient people believed that the power of wisdom is contained within this precious gemstone. They believed that when the wearer of a Sapphire faces challenging obstacles, the stone's power enables them to find the correct solution. The modern word Sapphire is derived from the ancient Latin term "Sapphirus". Sapphire in the Victorian Language of Gems meant “Innocence”, and is the birthstone for September.
A little history on Pink Sapphire versus Light Rubies:
Since our ancestors did not realize that ruby and sapphire is actually the same mineral, they left us with a dilemma: where should pink shades be classified? Long ago, people decided to call all gemstones of the mineral corundum as sapphire, except the red color, which was called ruby. But pink is really just light red. The International Colored Gemstone Association has passed a resolution that the light shades of the red hue should be included in the category ruby since it was too difficult to legislate where red ended and pink began. In practice, pink shades are now known either as pink ruby or pink sapphire. Either way, these gems are among the most beautiful of the corundum family.

This lovely wedding ring is now a size 6 ½ and can be resized, if need either larger or smaller. The ring has a bright and early look and very impressive on the finger.
