This ring was probably a wedding ring of the 1870’s. It was handmade of 9 karat yellow gold by an American goldsmith. The ring is set with a solitaire hand cut Peridot 1 carat weight. Peridot goes back to the ancient world and was at the height of use in the seventeenth century. It came from an island in the Red Sea off the cost of Egypt, and is the birthstone for August. It's been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years, and is mentioned in the Bible under the name of Chrysolite. Legend says that peridot was one of the favorite gemstones of Cleopatra and that some of the "emeralds" worn by her were actually peridot.
