1876 handmade and hand engraved locket to hold hair or photo of a loved one. The locket is in excellent condition. The engraving is very detailed and uniform, which is an art form not to be taken for granted. The back of the locket is hallmarked Birmingham, Sterling, and (b) for the letter date of 1876.and the initials of JE who are the maker’s mark. The word locket meant to hold a lock of hair from the beginning of the design. This period the lockets were usually large, this one is 2 1/2 inches long including the bezel and 1 2/3 inches wide. The detail on the outside edges is very well done. At this time most locket and pendants were worn with a ribbon to hold it around the neck. I have included a new sterling silver chain or you can wear it with a ribbon. Dramatic, beautiful and strong to wear clasp, is tight.
